The Byzantine Empire


Location

The Byzantine Empire was a Greekspeaking Roman Empire during the Middle Ages, centered at its capital in Constantinople (today Istanbul
Turkey).


Political characteristics

Constantinople was founded by Rome’s first Christian emperor,
Constantine on the site of a Greek seaport know as Byzantium. The first years were very difficult. Until the reign of Justinian I, which
began in 527, saw a period of extensive Imperial conquests of
former Roman territories. Justinian updated the ancient Roman legal code into the Corpus Iuris Civilis. By far the most significant building of the Byzantine Empire is the great church of Haig Sophia (Church of the Holy Wisdom) in Constantinople.


Economic characteristics

In commerce, Byzantium was one of the most important western
terminals of the Silk Route


Social characteristics
There was controversy and religious division over iconoclasm.

Cultural characteristics

Byzantium played an important role in the transmission of classical knowledge to the Islamic world and to Renaissance Italy.
