Political characteristics

People living in the Arabian Peninsula (Bedouins) worshipped
hundreds of gods and spirits. 732: 100 years after Muhammad’s death they controlled: Spain, Portugal, North of Africa, Palestine, Mesopotamia, the Arabian Peninsula and Western India. Caliphs were successors to the prophet with religious and political power.

Economic characteristics
Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians paid taxes to avoid converting into Islam. Taxes were the basis of the Islamic economy.

Social characteristics
Men can marry only four women. Women’s role is merely Reproductive.

Cultural characteristics

They worshipped stones in which they believed their gods lived. The Black Stone of the city of Mecca is within the wall of a shrine called Kaaba. It has 360 gods including Allah and it is today the most
important religious center for them. Muhammad was a Meccan trader who had a vision in which he was designated by Allah to be the last
and greatest prophets. After his dead, Islam spread around and his thoughts were written into the Koran.
 5 pillars of Islam
1. There is no God but Allah and Mohammed is his prophet.
2. You must pray five times a day without shoes, laying flat on the ground and turned to the Holy City of Mecca.
3. You must give away a portion of your wealth.
4. For one month (Ramadan) Muslims are not allowed to eat or drink between sunrise and sunset.
5. At least once, you must make a pilgrimage to Mecca.
Besides this, they don’t eat pork or drink liquor. On Fridays people go to the mosques (Muslim temples) to pray. A warrior killed in a jihad (holy war) was promised immediate entry into paradise. They developed the first chemical laboratories and were prestigious on
the treatment of diseases. They developed the use of astrolabe,
mathematics and literature. They had impressive architecture
such as the Dome of the Rock.
